Victoria Falls Is Zambia’s Most Popular Safari Destination
Victoria Falls in Zambia, also known as ‘Mosi-oa-Tunya (meaning the smoke that thunders), is the most attractive feature on River Zambezi. As the water flows over its 1708 meters wide cliff a blanket of mist rises to create a magnificent scene.
During the height of the rainy season the mist sometimes becomes so thick that it is difficult to view Victoria Falls. On the other hand, during the peak of the dry season when much less water is flowing over the Falls it is somewhat dull. The best time to view Victoria Falls is during July and August. A helicopter ride is an ideal way to view the Falls. Most people also like to experience the Falls from the ground where they can feel the spray on their faces. You might want to bring a raincoat.
The grand Victoria Falls Bridge stands not far from the Falls. The architecture that joins Zambia and Zimbabwe is a prized piece that provides an expansive view of the Zambezi and the adjacent rain forests. Bungee jumping is the most popular activity at the bridge. The fall is the second longest bungee distance in the world covering 111 meters long. The friendly Kariba and Cahora Bassa dams are the other remarkable sights along the Zambezi.
The massive Kariba dam in Zambia covers a total of 300km while Cahora Bassa dam in Mozambique is 280 km wide. Sport fishing is a popular activity at both dams. Tiger fish, which grow up to 10kg, are the most common fish in the dams. Other fish species that can be tagged include the red-breasted bream and the yellow-belly bream among others.
Zambezi River offers some of the best Africa wildlife viewing safaris in the region due to the numerous parks situated along its course. These include the Victoria Falls, Mana Pools Park as well as the Zambezi.
In addition to numerous tourist attractions, Zambezi region also has plenty of accommodation options to choose from. These range from expensive 5 star hotels to outdoor tents. Victoria Falls, Thorn Tree Lodge and Royal Livingstone Hotel are the most popular hotels around Victoria Falls.
