It conjures up the traditional Australian image of the tan and toned Aussie lifeguard in the red and yellow cap and budgie smugglers as well as the crowded yet breathtaking beach and ocean views. However, Bondi may be slightly overrated if crowds aren’t your thing and as any local will tell you if asked, there are plenty of similar beaches that you won’t have to fight to sit on.

The upper north shore of Sydney exhibits less popular, yet equally brilliant beaches that are often smaller and quieter. Palm Beach and Whale Beach are top picks located north of Sydney’s city center.

Sydney skyline at duskSydney also has plenty of night spots and local hangouts if you’re in the mood for a few cheeky lagers. The city also has a great variety of pubs and cheap hotels that will cater a decent meal as well quench your thirst. Kuleto’s in Newtown, Melt Bar in Kings Cross, and the Roxbury in Glebe are examples of beloved locales. The Rocks, just north of the city, is an historic district with many interesting pubs that sport views of the spectacular Harbour Bridge.

Food and travel go hand in hand and experiencing a country’s cuisine is integral to experiencing their culture. Sydney is also home to some of the best restaurants for experiencing modern Australian fare. There are so many restaurants in Sydney that visitors are spoiled with too many choices.
