I got on a flight from London Stanstead to Kuala Lumpur International Airport recently, on my way to spending time in Sarawak, Malaysia and I came across what was a very interesting article about the first Prime Minister of Malaysia. The article focuses upon “Tunku” as he was titled in Malaysia, and his time spent in Cambridgeshire, England.

The article author, Mansor Puteh, did the interview back in 1989, just one year before Tunku Abdul Rahman’s death. He remembers that Tunku would recall the period of time he spent at University in England very fondly, and thus he took it upon himself to come over to England to see for himself what it was really like.

The article describes how Mansor and his nephew traveled to the UK and followed in the footsteps of Tunku. He first arrived at Stanstead Airport – the airport I left from to travel to Kuala Lumpur – and first went to Grange Road where Tunku had stayed while studying at St Catherine’s in Cambridge.

As it turns out Tunku was initially not accepted when he expressed his wish to live on the university campus grounds because he did “not look quite like other students”. In other words, he had darker skin than everyone else at the university.

The Sultan of Kedah (Tunku’s father) invited the British advisor to Malaya (I think this would be similar or the same as an Ambassador) to communicate with the Dean of university that Tunku should have a place and of course the Dean – once he realized that Tunku was a prince, fully agreed. By this time though Tunku had become adapted to living life off-campus and so turned the offer down.

Tunku died in 1990 at the fine old age of 87. The author of this particular article, Mansor Puteh, is not only well known as a writer but also as a film maker. He is now working on a film titled “Malaysian Snow” which is based upon a group of Malaysian students currently living life and studying in Britain. The full article can be found in the “Travel 3 Sixty” magazine.
